La Crosse County Historical Society volunteering is a great way to have fun, meet new people, and learn new things about history. We have volunteer opportunities for many different interests and talents.

Docents (tour guides) at the Hixon House lead visitors on a guided tour of the house. Average time volunteered is one day a week or one day every other week. You can also volunteer to lead tours for special groups. This is a great way to meet new people and learn more about the Hixon House and La Crosse as it was around 1900. If you like history, acting, or public speaking, you might enjoy character re-enacting. Learn about a real historic character from the La Crosse area and portray that person during a cemetery tour, while meeting the steamboats at Riverside Park, or by participating in programs for local schools or nursing homes. There are many great characters in La Crosse’s past and we can find one that would interest you. We also can help you find a historical costume if you need one. For more information, please call 608-782-1980 or email us.

If you want to volunteer at a slower pace, we need people at the Swarthout Museum to greet visitors and take admissions. This may also be a good time to get caught up on your reading or homework! Usual time volunteered is for two or three hours per week on a weekday.
We also occasionally need volunteers for special projects. Examples include moving large artifacts, painting and carpentry, folding letters, and yard work. Please contact us for more information at 608-782-1980.
